Build a half-page case brief

A concise five-part case brief method for UK law students: issue, material facts, decision, reasoning and why the case matters.

Why this method works

A compact first brief forces you to decide what matters. Record the legal issue, only the facts that affected the reasoning, the court's decision, the decisive reasoning and the case's relevance to the topic you are studying. If you cannot fit the first version onto half a page, you may still be recording the judgment rather than analysing it.

The half-page limit is a starting discipline, not a universal rule. Add procedural detail, judicial disagreement or quotations when the seminar, essay or problem question requires them. Keep the original judgment open while you brief it, and clearly separate the court's reasoning from your own evaluation.

  • Begin with five essential parts.
  • Record material facts, not every fact.
  • Expand the brief only for a clear study purpose.

What the video says

UK law students, is your case brief hiding the point? Try a half-page brief first. Capture five things: the issue, the material facts, the decision, the reasoning, and why the case matters to your topic. Add detail only when your seminar or problem question needs it. Durmah helps you organise and question the structure. You still check the judgment, understand the reasoning, and own the final work.
