A practical guide to material permissions and private study.
You can build a useful study routine without giving a tool your whole course collection. Start with the topic you want to understand, your own reasoning and the questions you still have. This guide applies the principles explained, with sources, in Responsible study & student rights.
What kind of material are you using?

Does paying tuition make the resources mine?
It gives you the educational access agreed with your institution, not ownership of every document supplied. Your own original notes and the lecturer's original slides can have different rights holders. A student can authorise only rights they actually hold. Read Bodleian's student copyright guidance.
Is a private AI workspace just like a folder on my computer?
Both can hold electronic copies, and making a copy is not automatically infringement: ownership, an appropriate licence, permission or a qualifying exception can authorise it. A cloud AI service may additionally extract text and transmit it to other providers. Privacy controls do not supply copyright permission. Durmah's independent editor currently keeps your writing in the open browser tab until you download it; cloud records and any future AI processing are described separately in our privacy policy.
What about Microsoft tools, private documents and study organisers?
A student writing an original essay in Word, saving it in OneDrive, downloading or printing it and submitting it for marking illustrates an ordinary, potentially lawful use of cloud tools. The university does not acquire copyright in that writing simply because it is coursework. This example assumes the student holds the necessary rights, respects any third-party content and follows the assessment's instructions. A cloud account is not inherently unlawful; being Microsoft does not itself confer a copyright exemption.
Microsoft's education offering includes document creation, notes and organisation. These activities should be distinguished from generative assistance. A calendar entry, a saved document, an AI summary and model training can involve different purposes and permissions, even when they appear inside one app.

Microsoft's consumer Services Agreement leaves ownership with the user, requires the necessary rights and obtains a licence for service operations, including copies. This supports a useful distinction: authorised copying can enable a service without transferring ownership or publishing the material. The terms do not grant a student rights in a lecturer's or publisher's work that the student does not already hold.
An institution-managed account can have a different contractual and administrative setting from a personal account. For its organisation-managed Copilot services, Microsoft describes enterprise data protection, processor commitments and a commitment not to use prompts, responses and Microsoft Graph data to train foundation models. Controls depend on the subscription; web search and agents have additional terms. These commitments should not be assumed for every consumer product or for Durmah.
Microsoft also explains that Copilot interactions can be stored and subject to administrative retention controls. No training is therefore different from no storage. Private to other students does not necessarily mean inaccessible to administrators or service providers. Institutional provision of a tool also does not, by itself, authorise every upload or its use in every assessment.
What this means for Durmah: supporting a student's own writing, planning and understanding can be a legitimate service. The useful comparison is the actual material, permitted purpose, provider contracts and safeguards. Our public policies describe intended limits and current controls; they do not claim Microsoft-equivalent contractual protections. AI processing and new academic uploads remain paused while the required reviews are incomplete. Can an AI help in the same way a tutor does?
It can be designed around similar learning methods: questions, explanation and reflection. Calling it a tutor does not make its storage, processing and reuse identical to a person reading a page. Our tutor and cloud explanation sets out that distinction. Neither a human tutor nor an AI label determines what your assessment permits.
Individual study support and model training
Your study material is for your learning. Durmah's product rule is to process permitted material for the individual student's requested study assistance and the necessary service operations described in our privacy policy. That permission does not include using the material to train or fine-tune AI models, build shared model-improvement datasets, or provide another student's answers.
Generating a response from your prompt and permitted material is called inference. It is different from training or fine-tuning a model. The AI may use its existing knowledge and authorised reference sources to help explain your material; it is not limited to repeating your document. Another student's private work must not supply your answer.
This requirement applies to Durmah and its AI providers. Before release, provider contracts and settings must be reviewed for this restricted use of student inputs, outputs and derived content. These reviews are incomplete, so external AI and new academic uploads remain paused. No training is different from no storage or no operational access. What if I only want a summary?
A summary request still requires a lawful basis for the input processing. A summary can also reproduce protected expression; changing the wording is not a universal solution. Try identifying the concept and writing the point you find confusing yourself. That often supplies enough context for a useful explanation without copying the source document.
Do copyright exceptions matter?
Yes. Students have genuine rights under applicable exceptions; they are not limited to whatever a platform calls permitted. But whether an exception covers a particular document, amount and external processing needs its own assessment. Durmah currently requires reviewed permission or a suitable licence for third-party uploads and has not enabled uploads based solely on a claim of fair dealing. See our content policy.
A ten-week study plan without importing the handbook
Write a short list such as “week 1: offer; week 2: acceptance; week 3: consideration,” add your deadlines and decide when to read, practise and reflect. Check these facts against the current course timetable yourself. This illustrates how minimal factual context can support learning; it does not require duplicating the lecturer's explanations or uploading their assessment brief.
What can I use today?
Use the Study workspace availability for your own reasoning, source notes and reflection, and download your work before closing the tab. AI, new academic uploads and new purchases are paused. The availability page explains the reviews. Do not enter assessed work or restricted materials into AI tools when permission is missing or unclear.
