AI Usage Policy

Only material you are allowed to share

Uploads and AI processing are currently closed. These rules apply to any future use of My Assignments, Mark My Paper, My Lectures and other material-entry tools, including files, pasted text, recordings and imported links.

Your own original work: use only material you own and are allowed to share for the intended purpose. Calling a file “my notes” does not give you rights in copied slides, lecture text, images or someone else’s work.
University or other third-party material: obtain the rights holder’s permission or a suitable licence, and any permission required by your university or lecturer. It must cover sharing with Durmah, storage and the intended processing, including external AI where applicable. Access to a course portal, paying tuition or permission to record for personal study is not enough by itself.
Check the task rules: your university, programme, module and assessment instructions must allow the proposed use. Ownership or copyright permission does not override those restrictions. Do not upload live assessed work or restricted teaching materials.
Protect other people: do not submit other people’s identifiable information, confidential client material, passwords or university login credentials. Use only the minimum permitted context needed.

If you are unsure, do not upload, paste, record or import the material. Ask the rights holder and your institution first. Durmah cannot grant university permission. A checkbox is your acknowledgment; it does not prove permission or make a prohibited use acceptable. Third-party material remains subject to Durmah’s documented permission review before any upload feature can be released.

Your institution decides what AI use is permitted. Its current programme, module and assessment instructions take priority over any description, example or recommendation on Durmah. Our service does not grant permission or guarantee compliance.

Individual study support and model training

Your study material is for your learning. Durmah's product rule is to process permitted material for the individual student's requested study assistance and the necessary service operations described in our privacy policy. That permission does not include using the material to train or fine-tune AI models, build shared model-improvement datasets, or provide another student's answers.

Generating a response from your prompt and permitted material is called inference. It is different from training or fine-tuning a model. The AI may use its existing knowledge and authorised reference sources to help explain your material; it is not limited to repeating your document. Another student's private work must not supply your answer.

This requirement applies to Durmah and its AI providers. Before release, provider contracts and settings must be reviewed for this restricted use of student inputs, outputs and derived content. These reviews are incomplete, so external AI and new academic uploads remain paused. No training is different from no storage or no operational access. Current availability and task permissions

External AI and new academic uploads are paused pending the required reviews. The retained independent workspace was designed for your own writing, source notes and reflection without sending that text to AI; it is also currently closed. See current service availability.

When enabled, assistance requires a saved, current task record describing its purpose, jurisdiction and material rights. A checkbox or university email address does not grant permission. Assessment assistance also requires a reviewed policy version matching the exact student, module, assessment and requested action, including permission for external processing. Unknown, prohibited, expired, revoked or mismatched permissions block processing.

The initial AI coach is designed to ask diagnostic questions about reasoning you have written. It does not offer replacement essays or submission-ready answers. Older assignment, review and voice features have separate release checks and remain paused.

Task declarations expire after four hours. Revoke a task from the independent workspace to block subsequent requests. Revocation cannot recall content already transmitted to a provider. Activity records describe events in Durmah; they are not certificates of authorship or university compliance.

How policy updates are handled today

Durmah can check a recorded assessment permission against its source reference, reviewer, expiry, permitted actions and the specific task. A recorded replacement policy prevents continued reliance on the version it supersedes. These checks depend on evidence being reviewed and recorded.

Automatic university-policy monitoring is not currently in operation. The application does not continuously check university websites or student portals for changed instructions. A stored source fingerprint does not prove that the source is still current. Do not assume a previous academic year's policy applies to a new assessment.

Consult the latest university, school, programme, module and assessment instructions before seeking AI assistance. If instructions are missing, changed or conflicting, pause the affected use and ask your module team for clarification. Do not share university passwords or upload restricted policy documents. A general guidance page or student declaration cannot establish permission under a current programme or assessment policy.

Before any AI use

Being an independent provider or describing AI as a private tutor does not grant an exemption from copyright, privacy or assessment requirements. A material licence can allow processing without permitting its use in an assessment. Conversely, academic permission does not supply a missing copyright licence. Read the legal principles and our operating choices.

Read your current institutional rules, including restrictions on planning, feedback, editing and AI-assisted research.
If a use is prohibited or unclear, stop and ask your tutor before entering material.
Share only material you own or have permission to process with an external AI service. Do not share confidential data, restricted teaching content or recordings without permission.
Keep university passwords, payment credentials, client information and other people's personal data out of prompts and uploads.

Authorship and disclosure are not permission

Writing the final answer yourself, paraphrasing AI output or declaring assistance does not make an otherwise prohibited use acceptable. Follow any required disclosure rules, but do not treat disclosure as authorisation.

AI limitations

AI can make mistakes and invent authorities. Check legal claims against primary sources and official course material. Feedback is diagnostic, not an official mark, grade prediction, legal advice or assurance about academic conduct.
